Chapters 1 - 4

Read chapters 1-4, then answer this question:

Does someone with a special talent or power “owe” it to the community to use their abilities to help others?  Explain when is it ok to keep your talents and abilities to yourself, using examples to be very clear. Explain when would you be expected to use your talents to help others?

People with special talents or abilities don't owe anything to anyone. However they may be expected to preform at a higher level than the average individual in that certain case because they have that ability that others don't. It is truly up to the person with that ability whether or not they will help out when their talent is needed or if they will sit idle doing nothing. There is fine line between helping when you are needed and putting yourself at risk when you do such a task. For this reason it is ok to keep your abilities to yourself if you are at risk or harm from sharing that ability with others. But if you were in no danger from using your abilities when they are needed you need to share them in that instance. When you would be expected to use your abilities is if it was for the greater good of humanity. If the rewards outweighed the risks then you would be expected to use your abilities for the greater good.

One does not owe the community his/her powers just because he/she has them. However, a capitalist society (especially American) is set in such a way that if someone has a power, using it for the good of others would easily benefit them too. Great intellect and imagination can make someone beyond rich as an inventor and business owner or worker. This invention would obviously be helping people and the entire country as it would not have sold so well if it didn’t. Examples include, the iPhone, made by Apple, which was in turn owned and founded by Steve Jobs. The Model T Ford, the first mass produced car, made and designed by Henry Ford, is why the average citizens have cars today, and is why Henry Ford was so wealthy and successful.

    1. Fearghus, consider this. Had we not invented or (discovered) the "model T" or the "iPhone" we would still have Americans making an honest living and not the greedy corporations profiting of the poor. Also without cars no one would die in car accidents. The original Herny Ford died on April 7, 1947.

To say that someone with a special talent or ability owes something to the people he encounters is absolutely absurd. To be completely honest it's like saying that if one person just happens to be good at math, they MUST do everyone else's math homework because they owe it to them. During absolutely no circumstance does a person with special talents owe something to their community. As far as I'm concerned a person can keep their talents to themselves whenever they want and as much as they want no matter what's going on. However I can see some situations in which a person would be expected to use their talents. For example if the town was being threatened to be shut down, someone could use their talents in a way that could possibly help the town stay alive. Of course a talents a person had would very, but if someone knew everything about math they could help design an accurate plan of attack or help the town with financing. Another talent someone could have might be the ability to turn invisible. That said person could use that power to sneak into the headquarters of the person trying to shut down the town and foil their plans. However in the end a person with special talents owes nothing more to their community than an average person does.

Someone with a special power or ability most certainly does not owe anything to the community. Just because someone was born with a certain capability that others of us don't have does not make them responsible for anything more than the average person would be. I can see in some situations where the individual with special abilities may be expected to use their power for the greater good. For example, if someone was in danger instead of sitting back and watching them suffer, he/she would be expected to use their power for the greater good. They would be expected to help the victim in danger. So, in conclusion, even though an individual who is capable of more then the average human being might be expected to perform at a higher level or use their abilities for the greater good, one does not owe the community anything. They are allowed to keep their talents to themselves and in no circumstance are required to use any talents or abilities.

  8. Someone that possesses a special power should not have to "owe" anything to a community. It is not fair to a person to say that they should give a community their ability because no one else has it. It's sort of like saying that if someone has a lot of money that they should give some of the money to the community. In my personal opinion, a person should be able to do what they want with it. However, if a normal person was encountered someone being beaten, then they would try and help. This would be a time when a person with a special ability to step in and help just like a normal person most likely would. To be honest, I completely agree with Kailee when she says that someone with a special power doesn't owe anything to the community more than the average person does. It is their choice and freewill if they want to help out or use it to their own benefit. So no, one with a special power shouldn't have to owe anything to the community.

Someone that posses a special talent or power doesn't owe their community or people in their city to benefit or help them. It is up to that person's personal morals and how they choose to follow them. The person may choose to utilize their abilities in a moment of danger or when they see someone else in danger. You may get caught in a robbery and choose to do nothing to stop the robbers. This scenario can be reversed and you can use their abilities to rob a place. If I was in a bank robber, I would use my abilities to stop the robbers. Someone that is injured and needs assistance is another case where I would use my abilities.

Someone with the special abilities does not owe anyone or anything to the community. They will help everyone as hard as they can, and did not expect something in return. When something bad happen, someone with the special ability would not just stand back and do nothing, they will use their abilities to help who ever is in danger. Sine someone with the special abilities does not owe anything to the community, they have the right to keep their abilities to themselves. For example, if you have to help someone but it is too dangerous for you, or you have to take a risk, you should find another way to help them that would not put you in danger.

Someone who has an special ability should not and have no reason to 'owe' a person anyone. That person can not help with everything at once also, many people could start to abuse or even misunderstand the the life that person is going through. Like as a football team, if a person is really good at football he/she cannot carry the whole team with em, everyone has a part in life to do there part.
I would only use the abilities if in a state of danger where people could get hurt but i would be taking a huge risk and people could start or try to control what you are doing by getting into your life and using you for bad things. This person is a human to and should not be treated any better or any less let them live their lives at peace with no Pressure.

I believe that someone who holds a special power or ability does not owe it to the community. Just because someone who happens to be really good at something, does not mean that they have to use their talent to save, protect, or help the community. It is completely up to that person wether or not to use their power. However, I believe that it is important to be a good citizen and help others with your talents. An example of this, is if a person is in danger, or needs immediate help, this person should not tell themselves that they cannot use their powers. They are allowed to do anything they want with them, since people are free to choose what they will. Many people will want this person to use their powers to help the community, but it is not required of this person.

I don't think that anyone "owes" anything to anyone. I do think although, that people "should" help others if they have special abilities or powers or even nothing at all. I don't think that anyone with a conscience could look on while people are hurting or struggling with life if they can directly help. They should "do unto others as they would do unto you". If I was in danger of being hurt physically or emotionally, and I knew someone could help but they don't, I would be really mad. Ultimately, no one has to help anyone, but I think it would be selfish not to.

I believe no one owes anyone anything. There is no unwritten contract that says you must save the world. Having a special power or ability doesn't give you a obligation. It is always okay to keep your talents and abilities to yourself you do not have to share if you do not want to. I think there are times when you should help others like if someone is in danger or to make the world a better place. There are many people who would run away from danger instead of towards it but, it is all up to that person. There shouldn't be obligations.

To some extent, I do believe anybody who has special talents or abilities owes it to others to serve them. True, none of us are obligated to save the world, but we all have special talents that we should use to help others. To add to that, there are times when it is necessary to hide your talents and abilities. For example, if you have a mind made for the English subject, you may not want to let other students know that because it could lead to them copying your answers on a test or something of that sort. Another example that shows why it may be a good idea to hide your talents might be that if you're skilled at piano, but you prefer to play it for your own private enjoyment, it probably wouldn't be a good idea if you let others know of your talent, for they might want to hear you play while you would rather not do so publicly. However, everybody is expected to use their talents to help others at one time or another. That's kind of what this life is all about, really. once you grow into an adult, you have to use your talents to make the world a better place by contributing them to the lives of everybody else. If you're good at something, work in that field that fits your talent and it will help the world.

I believe that anybody that posses a special talent or ability does not owe anything to anyone. Although I do think people with special talents or abilities should aid other's when they are in the need of help. In any circumstances a person is allowed to keep their talents hidden whenever the person needs to. For example, if someone is hurt or not feeling well, the person should not deny the fact that they could help. It's a free will to help whenever you can. In other words, it would be selfish not to help, but it's up to the person.

No one should owe anyone anything, regardless of if they posses a special ability or not. If that person is uncomfortable with showing their talent or ability then they shouldn't feel obligated to use it for someone else's advantage. Another example would be if their talent helped one person, but could possibly harm 3 other people. They shouldn't have to use their talent, especially at the cost of hurting more people than helping. I think you would be expected to use your talents at the cost of saving lives, but even then it's still that persons choice. It may be frowned upon if you don't help, but if you aren't comfortable with what you're doing than you shouldn't have to.

Yes, someone with a special talent or power "owes" it to their community to use their abilities to help others. This is because everything happens for a reason. Someone who has this special ability has this power for a very specific reason: helping others for the betterment of the world. However, there's also a time and a place for everything such as hiding your talents or keeping them to yourself. It is fine to keep your talents to yourself when the only thing you can really accomplish is harm for others and yourself. On the other hand, if the situation where using your talents harms yourself while saving another person's life, then you are expected to use your powers to help that person. Again, this is because that is your "obligation" as a super-powered person.

Someone with an ability does not owe anything to his/her community. A person with a special ability is still a person. A normal civilian does not owe anything to his or her community so why should someone with powers be labeled different and have to owe anything to his/her community? By helping they would be taking a big risk. If they helped or showed people their powers some would be in awe and others would be afraid. The people who are afraid of this special person would take him into custody and his life would be ruined.
