Chapters 15 - 19

Read chapters 15 - 19, then answer this question: p. 158, “You’re saying he deserved it?”
“I’m saying he’s all right.  You don’t have to feel guilty....We had to do it.  Don’t you get that?  There was no alternative.”

Do you believe there was no alternative in this situation?  Take a side:  explain why this was the only choice or explain another way to handle this situation with Maddox.

In this case there was no black and white answer because no matter what they decided someone was going to get hurt. The question was left to who will be hurt and is it for a good reason. Lewis was right about needing to handle the situation that way because there was no other solution to the problem. If they were to let him go he would go to his organization immediately and give them all the information he had gained. The only solution is to get rid of the loose end. This was the only choice because instead of hurting one person (Maddox) many more would have been hurt (The Other Mind Readers). Sometimes decisions need to be made that aren't easy and make you feel guilty no matter what the decision is.

In the situation with Maddox there wasn't really any other alternative. No matter what had happened, someone was going to get hurt. I believe this situation was handled correctly. If Lewis and Arron had let Maddox go, he most likely would have gone back to S.P.I and told them everything that had happened. When the organization had gained this information the probability that they would come and hurt people staying with Arron was very high. Instead of taking the risk of S.P.I killing many people, Lewis and Arron decided hurting just one person, Maddox, was the better option.

By the time Cameron had learned about Maddox's existence it was far too late for turn back and create an alternate outcome. Judging from the way the author described Maddox's skin you could tell he had been help captive in that box for an extended period of time and has suffered a great deal. It's most likely that the only substance he was given was water so that over time he himself would weaken which the others most likely though would weaken the microchips power. Lewis and Aaron completely passed the boundaries in which they could turn back and right what they have wronged, plus they already had their minds set on getting any information that they could. Not only that but no matter what Cameron were to do in attempt to stop them, they would have found a way to crack the microchip. Cracking the microchip would eventually lead to Maddox almost dying, as already explained in the book. There is just no other outcome for this situation.

Sometimes there comes a situation where someone gets hurt in almost every scenario. Sometimes the person is bad, and he has to be stopped or others will die. There wasn’t much of an alternative to what Lewis and Aaron had to do to Maddox to keep him from talking. He would give away the position of every innocent mind reader there to S.P.I. If they didn’t hurt one person, they would all be caught, tortured, and probably killed by the evil organization. It was the right thing to do to stop Maddox.

In both situations, someone was going to get hurt therefore, no right or wrong answer. By letting Maddox go he could use the information that was gained and come back stronger with more knowledge and others. He could have also went back to S.P.I. and tell them everything he had just learned. Which they would use against the mind readers and hurt them. That still doesn't make it right to hurt Maddox who is still a human being. In the end, both sides get hurt, it just depends on which side you stand on to determine who you want to live and who you want to die.

What they have done to Maddox was the right thing to do, there was no alternative. If they let Maddox go, he might have let the S.P.I. know all about the information he have got from Aaron, but no matter how they have done it or something had happen, someone is going to get hurt. It's either the S.P.I. or Aaron's side. Even though what they have done is illegal, it is still better than they have become people who were being hunted.

In this situation there was no alternative because with the Maddox situation no matter what someone was going to get hurt. What Aaron and lewis had to do to Maddox from telling was right. Would if he exposed the mind readers and they got captured and used for experimental purposes and maybe even worst. There are two sides to this story and it is pretty much a live or die side so what is your pick?

Lewis and Aaron have caught Maddox, who is an agent from the S.P.I. organization. In order for Aaron and Lewis to keep Maddox from escaping, they have to torture him and treat him as a hostile. When Cameron finds this out, she is mad because she believes that his treatment wasn't necessary. However, Maddox was an agent from the organization in which Aaron was enemies with. From this statement, I believe that there was no other alternative to Maddox's treatment. Yes, it was inhumane and maybe even illegal, but it was important for Aaron to do, if he didn't want Maddox to escape.

I believe there was not really a better way. Any other way would have ended negatively as well. I think if they wouldn't have done what they did it may cause negative outcomes, Maddox worked for the agent which was a enemy. Even though feelings were hurt it was what needed to happen. I agree that torture is not considerate and a very negative way to deal with things it was what they had to do to keep Maddox from escaping. It was definitely the way to handle things.

I think that although torture and captivity are inhuman and morally wrong usually, I think that if you are doing those things to save lives, it can be tolerated. I don't mean that POW's should be tortured horribly; I think that if, for example, one had a nuclear code then it would be necessary to prevent catastrophe. In this situation, I think that it was necessary to keep Maddox in captivity so that he couldn't go back and tell S.P.I about the compound. I don't think on the other hand that they needed to torture Maddox. They could've just held him captive. I think that though there was no other way to keep Maddox from hurting more people than keeping him captive, I don't think that it warranted torture .

In the situation shown, I believe there was not any alternative to the choice Lewis and Aaron had made. Either way, of course, somebody would get hurt. If they had let Maddox go, he obviously would have notified the S.P.I. organization of the information he had acquired, and the area where Aaron was living would have been found. Having broken into Maddox's mind, though Maddox was harmed, Aaron had the advantage of knowing some of Maddox's knowledge. There was no alternative that kept them safe from the S.P.I. organization. Lewis and Aaron made the right choice here.

I don't really believe that there was another alternative. No matter what, someone was going to get hurt in the end. If what they did hadn't been done I feel like the outcomes could have been much worse than what they were. Even though it has a small negative outcome, it was the right choice. However torturing a person seems inhumane to me, if the intentions behind it are good, then you have to do, what you have to do. As they did, which worked and kept Maddox from escaping.

There was no alternative to the interrogation given to Maddox. On way or the other, one side was going to get hurt. If Maddox was released he would've notified the S.P.I of the information he had just obtained. He also would have told of the location of the Mind Readers and everyone would be captured and possibly be killed. Breaking into Maddox's mind allowed Aaron to acquire the information that Maddox has learned from his trip from the location of the Mind Readers. The choice that Aaron had made, had no alternative choice.

There wasn't an alternative in this situation. This was the only choice to handle the situation with Maddox. Everyone has to understand the reality of the situation: Maddox and his men can and will hunt and kill all the men, women, and children with special mind abilities. They can't let him escape and they need information from him. Cameron shouldn't feel so "mushy-gushy" about saving this stone-cold killer all of a sudden. I mean she let a man rob and shoot some people in the beginning of the book, but now she wants to help the enemy? All in all, this situation calls for brutal procedures to insure the safety of the people with special abilities.

There was an alternative in the situation. The way to avoid all this did not lie in Cameron or Arron's control. The only person who could have avoided this was Maddox. If Maddox had just told them everything he knew or not trespassed in the beginning he would not have been captured. He knew what the risks for and knew what was going to happen, but still did his job any way. So as you can see there was an alternative.
